The Institute of Geography is the scientific organization of the Slovak Academy of Sciences which pursues research/scientific activities in a number of geographical sciences in the scope fixed by the establishing documents No. 514/G/12/2008 issued 8th of August 2008 by the resolution of the Presidium SAS No. 1130 from 22 July 2008.

The mission of the Institute is the basic research of spatial structures and the bonds between the natural and socio-economic systems with a special regard for the territory of Slovakia.
